IMO head meets with families of Somalia hostages

June 24, 2010 – Secretary General Efthimios E. Mitropoulos of the International Maritime Organization met today with Labor Secretary Marianito D. Roque and OWWA Administrator Carmelita S. Dimzon to discuss measures intended to ease the plight of about 100 families of Filipino seamen who have gone through hostage situations at the hands of pirates off Somalia.

Ottawa to crack down on bogus immigration consultants

OWWA Toronto Welfare Officer Eric Parungao has cited news reports from Ottawa that the Canadian Immigration Ministry will introduce a new law that criminalizes any act to offer immigration services without being a registered consultant.

The news was carried in the Toronto Star’s June 6 edition, as reported by Nicholas Keung, the newspaper’s immigration reporter.

OWWA marks Migrant Workers’ Day on June 7

OWWA Administrator Carmelita S. Dimzon said an estimated 40,000 families of OFWs all over the country took part in the nationwide observance of Migrant Workers’ Day on June 7, which is also known in OFW circles as Araw ng Pasasalamat.

OWWA led the nation in paying tribute to Overseas Filipino Workers, with 17 Regional Welfare Offices taking active part at the local levels.
