Western Union Continues Supports For OWWA’s MODEL OFW FAMILY AWARDS

Western Union VP Patricia Riingen with Sec. Marianito Roque.
MANILA, Philippines, 29 August 2008 – The Western Union Company (NYSE:WU) announced today its support for the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s (OWWA) 2008 Model Overseas Foreign Worker (OFW) Family of the Year Award (MOFYA), an annual program that recognizes outstanding OFW families in the Philippines. As a major sponsor of the award, Western Union is contributing cash prizes and medals worth a total of PhP500,000 (around US$11,000) to the regional and grand winners.

For the second year, Western Union has also offered the use of its key Agent locations in the Philippines as collection points for MOFYA nomination entries. Applicants can drop off the nomination entries at selected Western Union Agent locations in the Philippines on or before October 15, 2008.
The 2008 MOFYA’s focus is on OFW and families who demonstrate steady and enduring family ties, maintain financial stability and contribute significantly to the community. Eligible applicants are families with either a land-based or sea-based OFW as a family member. 17 land-based and 17 sea-based OFW families will be announced in October 2008. From the 34 regional finalists, two national awards will be announced and given out at the Grand Awards Ceremony in November 2008.

“MOFYA allows us, as a country, to put the spotlight on our OFW’s hard work and their families’ dedication. OWWA is able to honor our country’s modern-day heroes and present them as role models to the rest of the country,” said OWWA MOFYA chairperson Alberto Valenciano.

Remittances from more than eight million OFWs to their families in the Philippines reached an estimated US$17 billion in 2007, making the Philippines the fourth-largest remittance-receiving country in the world, after India, China and Mexico (source: World Bank). Patricia Riingen, Western Union regional vice president for Philippines and Indochina, believes that MOFYA creates a platform where the government (through OWWA and affiliated agencies) and the private sector can highlight the achievements and contributions of the OFWs.

“Collaborating with OWWA through the annual MOFYA program allows Western Union to recognize Filipinos working abroad. We at Western Union acknowledge the significant role of our OFWs — not just as providers for the families in the Philippines, but also as catalysts for development in their respective communities,” said Riingen.
