OWWA Scholars Honored in Agency’s 26th Anniversary

Batch 1 of EDSP and Batch 4 of CMWSP Graduates
|
A total of twenty-three (23) Education for Development Scholarship Program and Congressional Workers Migrant Scholarship Program scholars were honored during OWWA’s 26th Founding Anniversary held last 02 May 2008 at the Palacio de Manila.

The scholars belong to OWWA Regional Welfare Offices I, II, III, IV, VI, X, XI, and the National Capital Region. Most notable among them are Jestoni Babia, Chow Wai Yee, Christopher Irorita, and Rhea Biselle Ramirez who all graduated Magna Cum Laude in their respective courses.

Mr. Jestoni Babia served as the scholars’ spokesperson and was described by Director Albert Valenciano as one of the country’s future leaders as Jestoni did not only excelled in his academics, but is also an active student leader.
In his speech, Jestoni thanked OWWA for the support it gave him as his parents cannot afford to send him to college if not for the EDSP. He also mentioned that his scholarship also opened opportunities for him and widened his participation in the community.
He also showed his gratitude to Secretary Marianito D. Roque, Director Luz Talento, Director Petrona Bergado and to the rest of the OFW welfare officers and staff for their all out support and dedication in their life-long service for all OFWs and their dependents.
He ended his speech by mentioning the big difference that OWWA has made to the lives and hearts it touched of the future generation who will be next leaders of the country.
Secretary Roque lauded the scholars, particularly the EDSP scholars for being the first graduates of a purely OWWA scholarship program. The EDSP is the first OWWA scholarship program for children or beneficiaries
of OFWs who intend to enroll in any 4-to-5 year baccalaureate course. It started in 2004 and offers one hundred (100) slots every year to qualified applicants. Secretary Roque believes that education as a tool, will empower these children of OFWs and enable them to have a better life and as a whole, help improve the Philippines in the long run. As such, OWWA is currently studying of expanding the program to grant more slots for qualified beneficiaries.
Secretary Roque also mentioned how much OWWA had achieved in the past twenty-six (26) years to the extent that being featured in a tabloid or acknowledged as a popular jeepney destination is no longer a dream for OWWA pioneers like himself.
